Just Married

Considering their wedding cost over $20,000 and took a year and a half to organize, you would be surprised to hear that Richard and Victoria Hammond now intend to forget it. Well, almost.

«It was a wonderful wedding, an unbelievable day,» says Victoria. «But we have so much we want to do together now, we are both looking to the future.» Her husband, banker and amateur race driver Richard, agrees. «Both our minds are now fixed firmly on the future. I’ll never forget our wedding ceremony or the reception we had at a cliff-side hotel afterwards, but there’s so much we want, so many hopes. Our marriage is so much more important than the wedding.»

«At the moment, we are still living with my parents,» explains Victoria, «so our first wish is to find our own place. We intend to start looking for a new house with all the modern conveniences in the suburbs in the new year.» Both Victoria and husband Richard have a lot of siblings. Do they intend to add to the extended Hammond family? «We plan on having two or three children ourselves,» Richard tells me. «Victoria is just wonderful with children and I can get 3 years paternity leave from my work, which is just perfect.»

The young couple has just returned from a two-week honeymoon spent in an authentic Scottish castle. Both the newly-weds are big travel lovers and Richard hopes this will continue. «I would like to go travelling as much as possible together. Travelling with someone else is such a sharing experience. I think it’s sad to experience all the wonderful places in the world and have no-one else there.» Victoria also has another great travel ambition that she might have to do alone. «I have always been fascinated by safari and my real wish is to go on safari. Richard has no interest in wildlife though.»

And what about the marriage itself? In a world with such a high divorce rate, how do Richard and Victoria hope to avoid all the problems that beset so many other couples? Richard explains thoughtfully that «our ambition is to always talk to each other. If you stop communicating, what chance do you have?» His wife goes along with that completely. «I hope that we can speak about things, but also not expect everything to be easy. I think many people expect the wedding to be the end of getting to know each other. I think it’s the start.»

The Story of the Aral Sea

In 2009 in Kazakhstan, a group of fishermen met on a Sunday afternoon. They were on the beach of the North Aral Sea. They ate food. They did some sports. Afterwards, they told stories and sang songs about the Aral Sea and fishing. It was a good party.

The fishermen were happy because there were fish in the water. For many years, there weren’t many fish. At one time, the Aral Sea in Central Asia was the fourth largest lake in the world. It had an area of 67,300 square kilometres. Two of the biggest rivers in Central Asia, the Amu Darya and the Syr Darya, went into the Aral Sea. But the water almost disappeared.

The Aral Sea was a busy place. Almost 20 percent of the Soviet Union’s fish came from here. 40,000 people lived and worked near the lake. Then people used the water in the two rivers for agriculture, so the water didn’t arrive at the Aral Sea. Also, it didn’t rain for many years.

Then, in 2005, the Kazakh government and the World Bank built a dam. The dam separated the north and south parts of the sea. Then the north part of the Aral Sea started to fill with water again.

Philip Micklin is a scientist. He studies the Aral Sea. In 2010 he said ‘Nature can come back.’ But in 2014, he saw satellite pictures of the east part of the Aral Sea. It was completely dry.

In June 2015 a scientist from Uzbekistan, Yusup Kamalov, and a National Geographic reporter visited the Aral Sea. They found a huge desert. They stood on the sand. Once it was the edge of the water. Now the water is 80 kilometres away. They drove to the water. On the way, they passed oil and natural gas rigs. Kamalov said that every year there are more oil rigs. They arrived at the edge of the Aral Sea. The water was very salty. There were no fish. Kamalov said, ‘This is what the end of the world looks like’.

Reading Comprehension – Elephants

Elephants are large mammals of the family Elephantidae and the order Proboscidea. Traditionally, two species are recognized, the African elephant and the Asian elephant, although some evidence suggests that African bush elephants and African forest elephants are separate species. Other families of the order Proboscidea, including mammoths and mastodons are now extinct.

Elephants are scattered throughout sub-Saharan Africa, South Asia, and Southeast Asia. Male African elephants are the largest surviving terrestrial animals and can reach a height of 4 m (13 ft) and weigh 7,000 kg (15,000 lb).

All elephants have several distinctive features the most notable of which is a long trunk or proboscis, used for many purposes, particularly breathing, lifting water and grasping objects. Their incisors grow into tusks, which can serve as weapons and as tools for moving objects and digging. Elephants’ large ear flaps help to control their body temperature. Their pillar-like legs can carry their great weight. African elephants have larger ears and concave backs while Asian elephants have smaller ears and convex or level backs.

One of the biggest threats to elephant populations is the ivory trade, as the animals are poached for their ivory tusks. Other threats to wild elephants include habitat destruction and conflicts with local people. Elephants are used as working animals in Asia. In the past they were used in war; today, they are often put on display in zoos and circuses.

How I am going to celebrate the New Year

New Year’s Day is a national holiday celebrated on January 1st, the first day of the New Year. New Year holidays are often marked by fireworks, parades, and reflection upon the last year while looking ahead to the future’s possibilities. Many people celebrate New Year in the company of friends and relatives. Typically the customs and traditions of happy New Years Day involve celebrating with champagne and a variety of different foods. For many people celebrating New Year is their opportunity to learn from the prior year and make positive changes in their life. I love winter and New Year very much. I love spending it with my family, friends and relatives. Like every year my family members and I will decorate our Christmas tree with toys and colorful lights. I will buy presents for the members of my family as well. After New Year supper we love watching Christmas movies and shows. Then we exchange our gifts with the family members and guests.
